What is a captive audience?

In digital advertising, the term 'captive audience' refers to users exposed to advertising content with limited freedom to ignore or modify the content. For example, a non-skippable video ad that precedes video content that a user wants to watch is a captive audience situation because that user is more likely to watch the ad in its entirety in order to access the desired content.
